My favourite 18 places to get traditional ‘kolace’ cakes in Prague
Best 18 places to get a traditional Czech ‘Kolace’ cakes in Prague (2026) as recommended by a local (and a baker…), including locations, prices, opening times and what’s best to buy.
The best thing about Prague is that you can find plenty of small bakeries here, each with a different recipe and a version of the traditional Czech ‘kolac’.
Kolac or a ‘little cake’ is one of my favourite sweet treats and it was also one of the first things I learned to bake and way before I baked my first bread!
Kolac is baked with essentially a basic white bread dough which is often enriched with eggs, butter, milk and sometimes sugar. The dough is first shaped into a small bun roll and then pressed into a medium sized round and topped with a filling.
The filling is traditionally either poppy seeds (mak), curd (tvaroh) or various fruits, such as plums, morello cherries or apples with crumble topping. There are so many more different fillings, such as walnuts or pears, but the curd or the poppy seeds are probably the most popular ones.

As somebody, who bakes ‘kolace’ at home and runs bread baking courses, I truly appreciate the hard work that goes into baking a great ‘kolac’. And I’m really happy to see that artisan bakeries in Prague are flourishing.
A great quality also means a higher price, so apart from the top artisan bakeries, I’ve also included my favourite standard bakeries that are perfect for everyday kolace, that are perhaps more affordable.
I’ve personally tried all the bakeries over the last few years and I’m happy to recommend them to my friends and family and now to you! So, without further ado, here is my favourite list of the best 18 places to get traditional ‘Kolace’ in Prague.

1. Zrno, Zrnko
This is a wonderful bakery, that has several branches (I have listed the ones that are closer to the centre of Prague) and also supplies quite a few hotels and some of my favourite cafes, such as Cocovanka, Kavarna co hleda jmeno, Cafefin or Kolektor Cafe.
Their traditional Czech kolace taste great and most days you can get a good selection of the following flavours: curd cheese, poppy seeds with plums, raspberry, red currant or blueberries.
Last time I visited the Smichov branch I had the most amazing Curd Cheese & Blueberry Kolac with sweet crumble and honestly it was one of the best ones I’ve even eaten. The dough was well balanced and actually had a flavour on it’s own (oh, yes, salt, thank you!) and the whole kolac had just enough sweetness without tasting too sweet. Absolutely delicious!
- Location:
- Toyen 3410/7, Prague 5 – Smíchov
- Senovážné Namesti 978/23, Prague 1,
- Corner of Bělehradska and Rumunska Street, Prague 2
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday 7.30 am – 7 pm, Saturday 8 am – 7 pm, Sunday 8 am – 6 pm
- Cake Prices: from 62 – 95 CZK depending on fillings

2. Kus Kolace
This little bakery always sells out well before its closing time, so come in early if you want to get your piece of cake! The name ‘Kus Kolace’ means something like ‘ a piece of cake’ and they mainly bake traditional Czech ‘kolace’. When I visited they also had several types of fruit and crumble topped tray bakes. Their ‘kolace’ are baked with sweet bread dough and topped with blueberries, plums, apples and other fruit and sweet crumble topping.
Cakes start from 65 CZK and they are certainly worth the price! Everything is baked on the premises and you can watch the baking as you wait in the queue (oh, yes, the cakes are so good, you’ll have to queue for them!).
Also my local tip: don’t leave it too late in the day to visit this amazing bakery. When they sell out (and that happens very often) they just close the shop!
- Location: Korunni 90, Vinohrady, Prague 2
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 8 am – 5 pm, Saturday 9 am – 2 pm, Sunday – Closed
- Cake Prices: from 65 CZK

3. Pekarna Praktika
This artisan bakery is very different from the others because here they even mill their own flour on the premises! This is the only place I found in Prague, that doesn’t use a traditional white flour for the ‘kolace’ dough. Instead their version of ‘kolace’ is baked with freshly milled rye flour. This makes the cakes much healthier than from a traditional bakery, but they are still very light and taste great.
Last time I visited, I had the Red Currant Kolac with crumble and it was absolutely amazing!
Location:
- Sokolovská 6/85, 183 00 Praha 8-Karlín (close to Krizikova Underground Station)
- Bělehradská 66, 120 00 Praha 2-Vinohrady
- Opening times: 7.30 am – 6.30 pm every day
- Cake Prices: from 70 CZK

4. Kolacherie
I just love the idea of a shop that sells only traditional Czech kolace! Last time I visited, they had several different flavours (poppyseeds, curd cheese) and also a vegan version of their cakes. Most days, they also have a savoury version (not traditional, but it’s a good option to have, I think) and Moravian style cakes with two different fillings.
I tried the poppyseeds one and whilst the flavour was a little bland, the dough was well made with a great poppyseeds filling that was honestly made with no additional ingredients that shouldn’t be there. The size is also a little smaller than in other bakeries, but the price is lower too. This is perfect if you want to try few different flavours.
Location:
- Celetna 27, Prague1
- Corner of Na Rybnicku and V Tunich Street, Prague 2
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday 8.30 am – 6 pm, Sat – Sun 9 am – 6 pm
- Cake Prices: from 50 CZK
5. Tady a Ted (Here & Now!)
A perfectly hidden bakery just outside the Andel Underground Station, which bakes amazing traditional cakes and also fantastic tray bakes. The cake flavours change daily, but usually they have Chocolate & Cheese Curd, Morello Cherries with Butter Crumble, Apple Cake with Cinnamon and Caramel.
- Location: Na Belidle 31, Prague 5 – Smichov
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday 7.30 am – 6 pm, Sat + Sunday Closed
- Cake Prices: from 40 CZK

6. Cukrarna U Hrdinu
I absolutely love this place! The cakes are delicious, made from proper ingredients and baked in a traditional way using oldfashioned recipes. Although, the place is called ‘Cukrarna’ I find it’s more like a sweet bakery. Every time I come in, they have different flavours from Poppy Seeds, Apricot & Crumble, Rhubarb & Crumble, to Cheese Curd or Blueberry Crumble. They also make amazing tray bakes and it’s the only place I’ve seen making traditional Poppy Seeds Cake with Lemon Icing.
If you can’t decide which cake to have, try the selection of ‘Wedding Kolace Cakes’ which are much smaller (and cost about 1/2 price).
I have it on a good authority (mum used to work in the Veletrzni Palac opposite in the 1970s), that there have been a bakery there since the 1950s and always was popular. Since 2020 there are now new owners, but a lot of the specialist bakers are the original staff who worked there for the last 20-30 years.
Oh, and the best thing? It’s not cutesy, overpriced kind of place pretending to be a trendy bakery – it’s the real deal for local people, who appreciate the traditional cakes and come here every day.
- Location: Dukelskych Hrdinu 36, Prague 7 – Holesovice
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday 7.30 am – 6 pm, Saturday 9 am – 6 pm, Sunday 9 am – 6 pm
- Cake Prices: from 35 CZK
7. Kro Bakery
Kro Bakery was originally founded by a chef Vojta Vaclavik in 2019 and they use flour milled in a stone mill in Krišnův Dvůr and the Pekárek Mill in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.
Their cakes are fully of fruit fillings and topped with buttery crumble. Everything is baked at their Vrsovice branch and then delivered to other smaller branches across Prague.

8. Eska
What you can expect from Eska is traditional cake recipes with excellent quality ingredients and flavours with a little bit of a modern twist. I like the Moravian style cakes with curd cheese and plum jam (povidla), but the fruit filling cakes look delicious too! They are slightly on a smaller side and they do cost a bit more than in other artisan bakeries, but they quality is really good.
- Location: Pernerova 49, Karlín, 186 00, Prague 8
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 7 am – 7 pm, Saturday – Sunday: 8 am – 6 pm
- Cake Prices: from 78 CZ – 90 CZK
9. Chleba a Kafe (Bread & Coffee)
This is a tiny little place a little out of the way, but their generous kolace crumble topping is worth the journey. You can choose from around five different fillings and these also change from day to day.
- Location: Jugoslavska 17, Prague 2, Vinohrady (close to IP. Pavlova Underground Station)
- Opening Times: Monday – Thursday 8 am – 5 pm, Friday 8 am – 3 pm, Sat- Sun: Closed
- Cake Prices: from 48 CZK

10. Nas Chleb (Our Bread)
This bakery has many branches across Prague and quite a few in the centre and I’ve also seen their stall at Andel Farmer’s Markets in Prague 5, the Easter and Christmas Markets in several locations across Prague.
‘Nas Chleb’ is a family-owned bakery, founded over 26 years ago in Jablonec nad Nisou, where all the cakes is still baked and then distributed into all the branches.
The cake recipes are based on traditional recipes and everything is still made by hand using the best ingredients. They have all the traditional flavours and also seasonal flavours with whole fruit added to the edges of the cakes, which means there are no dry sides! Yay! I really like the Strawberry & Crumble Topping or the Poppy Seeds & Plums cake, but you can’t go wrong with any flavour.
The prices are slightly higher than in regular supermarkets, but slightly lower than in some other artisan bakeries in Prague.
- Location:
- Opletalova 1535/4, 110 00 Praha 1
- Pohořelec 146/9, 118 00 Praha 1

11. Antoninovo Pekarstvi
Antonín’s first bakery opened in 2014 and now it has a network of six artisan bakeries in Vinohrady, Vršovice, Karlín, Holesovice, Smichov and Letná.
Everything is baked on premises and you can see the staff shaping and baking behind the counter as you browse the large selection of kolace and other baked goodies. The kolace flavours here are very traditional, but delicious all the same. There are different flavours every day and you can usually choose from Poppy Seeds, Curd Cheese, Apple, Apricot or other fruit fillings with crumble.

- Opening Times: Monday to Sunday: 7 am – 7.30 pm
- Cake Prices: from 35-55 CZK

12. Kabat Bakery
Kabat Bakery is a family family-owned bakery started in 1992 using traditional recipes and they always have at least 3-4 different types of Kolace on offer. I particularly like the Walnut or the Apple Kolac, but again you can’t go wrong with any type.
One of my favourite bakes from Kabat bakery is the Prague Cake (42 CZK). This is a light brioche-like dough filled with vanilla pudding cream and topped with cinnamon crumble.
It’s a very traditional cake, but you won’t find it anywhere else (apart from here and Liberske Lahudky – Albert supermarket has a version too, but it’s not as nice as these two). The Prague Cake is not particularly sweet, which is one of the things I really like about it. Once you’ve tried it, it’s difficult to resist it, which is why this cake always makes it on my walking trips days from Prague.
Location: There are over 32 locations (usually at the entrance of Underground stations), but I’ve listed the ones close to the Prague centre
- Mustek Underground Station – lower ground before you enter the station
- Florenc Underground – outside the entrance
- Nadrazni 25, Andel Underground (inside Albert Supermarket)
- Plzenska 8 (inside Novy Smichov Shopping Centre at Andel Underground)
- Zlicin Underground – as you walk out of the underground

- Taboritska 24, Olsanske Namesti, Zizkov, Prague 3

- Cake Prices: from 25 – 45 CZK depending on size

13. Krusta
If you get ‘kolace’ cravings at 2 am, head for the Krusta bakery, where you can buy their delicious kolace all night (and day long)! Yes, that’s right this bakery is open 24/7 and they have at least 3 different types of Kolace to choose from, including Curd Cheese, Poppy Seeds, Blueberry, Apple or Plum Jam.
- Location: Vodickova, Prague 1
- Opening Times: Non-stop – 24/7
- Cake Prices: from 42 CZK

14. Liberske Lahudky
This is my regular place to buy great kolace for normal prices. They have always several types of Kolace to choose from and I can never resist their Pear filling or Poppy Seeds with Plums filling kolace. If you want to try few different types, then choose the ‘Svatebni Kolacek’ (Wedding Little Cake) – these are smaller versions of the regular kolace and you get about 2 for the price of one large one.
Location: There are about 16 different locations in Prague, but I’ve chosen the branches that are the closest to the centre
- Vodičkova 730/9, Old Town, Prague 1 (close to Wenceslas Square)
- Biskupská 1065/1, Old Town, Prague 1 (close to the White Swan department store)
- Ostrovskeho 33/2, Na Knizeci – Andel Underground Station
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 6.30 am – 7 pm, Saturday – Sunday: 8 am – 6 pm (smaller branches close earlier at the weekend)
- Cake Prices: from 15 CZK, 37 or 45 CZK depending on size

15. Bochnicek
Another normal bakery for local people, where everything is baked on premises by the shop staff. Good choice of Czech Kolace with buttery crumble and Moravian Kolace (with two different fillings) at regular prices.
- Location: Jecna 11, Prague 2, Nove Mesto
- Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 6.30 am – 8 pm, Saturday: 7 am – 8 pm, Sunday: Closed
- Cake Prices: from 38 CZK

16. Merhautovo Pekarstvi – Bakery
Another amazing local bakery with really great quality cakes. They have different fillings every day, including the traditional poppy seeds, curd and fruit compote fillings. As you can see, I can never resist the poppy seeds cake, which I have often on my way to the Technical Museum and the Letna Park, which is just round the corner.
- Location: Milady Horákové 689/6, 170 00 Praha 7-Holešovice
- Opening Times: Monday to Friday 6 am – 6 pm, Saturday 7 am – 12 noon, Sunday – closed
- Cake prices: from 30-35 CZK

17. Farmer’s Markets
I always pop in to my local market at Andel, which is one of the main farmer’s markets in Prague to get cakes from small bakeries, that usually don’t sell anywhere else.
There are different stallholders each week and they also vary depending on the location. Smichovska Naplavka is the largest market open each Saturday and ‘Jirak’ (Jiriho z Podebrad Square) runs markets several times a week.
One type of traditional cake to look for at these markets (which you won’t find anywhere else) is ‘frgal’. This is Moravian cake, which is very thin with various fruit, curd or poppy seeds toppings and crumble. It’ usually sold in large quarters, it almost looks like a 1/4 of a pizza and it’ so worth trying!
- Location: various locations in Prague (see my link above)
- Opening Times: Wednesday – Friday 8 am – 2 pm, Saturday 8 am – 2 pm
- Cake Prices: from 40 – 70 CZK

18. Food Supermarkets
I know I’m listing this option as the last one, but if you’ve never tried traditional Czech Kolac before you can’t go wrong with trying it from a regular supermarket in the centre of Prague. Most kolace from supermarkets are pretty O.K. I mean, they are not as good as from an artisan bakery, but you get a lot more for your money.
I buy kolace from supermarkets regularly and I found that Penny supermarket seems to have the tastiest ones for the best price.
What I mean, is that supermarkets often add vanilla pudding into the curd cheese because it makes it cheaper or make the poppy seeds filling with bread crumbs to make it go further and Penny supermarket, at least to me, feels like they don’t do this as much as other supermarkets.
By the way the green ‘kolace’ on the photo above were kiwi flavour and no, I wasn’t brave enough to try them!
- Location: various locations in Prague (see my link above)
- Opening Times: Monday – Sunday 6 or 7 – 21 or 22 pm (some places until midnight)
- Cake Prices: from 15 CZK
